Ceremonial Purses in the 14th Century

Purses have a long and illustrious history in Europe and played a large role in important ceremonies. In the 1300's, a wedding purse was usually given to the bride from the groom and there was even a law drawn up by the magistrates in the city of Zittau stating that "no one but the groom may give the bride a purse."

It is not know if the wedding purses were actually carried; speculation is that they may have been put away and used for storage of valuables.

Another ceremonial purse was called the Saracen purse, which was usually trapezoid in shape with a rounded tip and inspired by oriental products. The making of these purses was rigorously controlled and laws existed that stated that the purse makers "cannot and must not use threaded or twisted silk instead of fine golden thread from Luques, otherwise the work will be counterfeit".

The history of purses is long and some form of handbag has existed throughout the world for centuries. We have more information about the history of purses at Henrietta's Handbags.

I heard you missed me

Well, I'm back! For today, at least. The weather is getting temperate enough that I can wear a tie and walk to work (1.6 miles, as it turns out) without feeling miserable by the time I arrive, so I jumped back in today with a Verner Panton-inspired tie from IMM. Panton was what first sprang to my mind; on the other hand, a colleague took one look at me today and said, "Viva Las Vegas!" The tie does indeed have the shapes of poker chips and the colors of playing cards, so I think he called this one better than I did. (Please pardon the quality of the picture, I am still adjusting to a new camera that takes huge pictures, and new photo editing software (GIMP) that is not the same as what I am used to.)

Boots with bows on the toes - why Anthropologie, why?

74530_bro_b.jpg
I couldn't wear these boots. They're a great colour, the heel's a nice height and the calves look quite roomy (a requirement for me!) But what's with those bows on the toes? They'd drive me mad. I know I'd just be able to see them from the corner of my eye and keep wondering what was stuck to my boot. The bow aside though, I do like these 'Keepsake' cocoa leather boots, US$288, from Anthropologie.

Marc by Marc Jacobs - for the woman who needs wellies

mjacobs_674136_fog_325.jpgIf I'm going to have to buy a pair of wellies this year (which I strongly suspect I will) then it's going to be a posh pair. No cheap wellies for this shoe lover! This nice understated pair is from Marc by Marc Jacobs, and though I'm attracted to pink boots with hearts (or similar) I think I'm grown up enough for something plain. The colour is fog and they cost US$190.

More wellies! Kate Spade's 'Riley' red daisy rain boots

_5401580.jpg'm rarely attracted to wellies, but these I'll have to make a special exception for. I'm quite taken by the bursts of red petals on the off-white background, which is somehow kept from being too messy by a neat black and white striping effect at the soles. An extremely practical buckle at the top of the boot allows easy adjustment to calf-size fits, and looks quite smart, too! Waterproof, of course, just in time for some rainy weather dregs, even in sunny California. US$125 for the kate spade 'Riley' red daisy boot.

Stuart Weitzman's 'Just So' brown slingbacks with platform sole and peep toe

just-so.jpgOk, so admittedly Stuart Weitzman's 'Just So' brown calf platform slingbacks probably aren't the most practical choice of footwear in the world as we head towards winter, but these are so gorgeous that they're worth buying and saving until the weather is more suitable. Priced at US$171 from Bluefly, they're mid brown in colour with slingback detail and calfskin uppers. Go on... you know you want to!

Nine West's metallic slingback peeptoe 'Regis' sandals on sale

nine-west-slingbacks.jpg I have no idea how these Nine West 'Regis' slingbacks made it onto the sale rack. Not only are they absolutely gorgeous, with their elegant shape and jewelled front, they're also going to be perfect for the Christmas party season, which will be upon us sooner than I like to think about. Available in black or gold (Nine West say it's gold, anyway - this is one of those cases where it looks more like silver to me), they're down to just $59.99, which I think is a bit of a bargain, working out at roughly GB30. They're still available in everything but a US 5 and 11, too.

Dolcis Blade patent and suede flats in this season's 'new black'

L041238.jpgI hate the phrase 'the new black' but it seems that it actually applies to navy this season. Yes, black will never go out of fashion, but navy has gone from almost unacessorisable (it's a word!) to being big news this season.

The more I look at these Dolcis flats the more they grow on me. They have a little bit of an '80s edge which usually turns me off, but it's more Dallas than Duran Duran so I shall forgive. The suede and patent work fantastically together on this pair, and they pull off a pointed toe with no heel really well thanks to a subtle shaping. They're a bit of a bargain in true Dolcis style at just 25. Well worth the investment to wear with everything this season.

Menswear inspired shoes: Belle by Sigerson Morrison stiletto heeled oxford booties

_5487423.jpgThe menswear inspired shoe trend continues, and thus far this Belle by Sigerson Morrison stiletto oxford (US$295) is the most feminine incarnation I've seen. I'm quite fond of the black version, but I feel that the visibility is somehow lacking, and that the cute design isn't as apparant as it could be. In the gray version, however, the suede and laces, sleek lines, contoured shape all complement each other quite well. The soft color and delicate shape are unmistakably feminine, while the top laces and oxford design are quite cutting-edge trendy.

Dita slips into some classic Louboutin's for Peta: World sits up and takes notice

I love Dita von Teese, poo to all those who say she's fake burlesque, she's promoting a look that's a heck of a lot more awesome than most celebs. More respect for the lady comes with her choice of shoes in her recent (and much talked about) ad for Peta.

She's slipped elegantly into a pair of Louboutins and they're one of my favourites, the Mouche Zeppa. They're available in white, black or navy for $875 from Neiman Marcus, for those who simply must splurge. And I can't blame you for doing so, although I will be very very jealous.

Stuart Weitzman tries and fails with his Patent Cutout Booties

NMX05BV_mn.jpgIt's never long after a trend comes along that designers who didn't get there first start chopping the crap out of it. In my experience, this rarely trumps the original and that pretty much sums up my feelings on Stuart Weitzman's Patent Cutout Booties.

He appears to have taken the classic brogue/oxford boot and given it a bit of sass and originality by firstly making it patent and then making odd cutouts. I'm afraid it really falls down in the style stakes for me. Mixing genres like this basically Victorian inspired shoe with modern twists is a tricky business. I think Stuart should go back to the drawing board.

Sergio Rossi loves zips and rubber, as shown by these black high heeled 'Farisa' court shoes

8521-458685-d.jpg
When I first saw these I thought they looked a little odd. I couldn't work out what the heel and sole were made of and I really couldn't decide on the decorative zip. It turns out the heel and sole are rubber and I've learned to love the zip. Of course, that fact that they're the 'Farisa' from Sergio Rossi helps. If Sergio Rossi wants to use rubber and zips then that's okay with me, but sadly I don't have US$693.95 to spend on them.

Badgley Mischka's 'Shiloh' rhinestone strappy sandals - a homage to Brangelina's offspring?

shiloh-shoes.jpgGiven that "Shiloh" isn't exactly a common name, I have to wonder whether Badgley and Mischka had Brad and Angelina's daughter in mind when they designed these shoes - and if so, what it was about a toddler that made them think, "I know! Rhinestones and stilettos!" Well, rhinestone-studded stilettos may not work for Shiloh Jolie-Pitt quite yet, but I'm sure the rest of us are old enough to enjoy these sparkly offerings: this picture isn't a great one, so I'd advise taking a look at the 'Shiloh' page at Zappos Couture to see these in close-up.

Available in mushroom and black, there's lattice work on the vamp and a slender ankle strap, and although the sides of these are encrusted with rhinestones, they somehow manage not to look too OTT. They're $548.95.

Renee Zellweger buys Manolo Blahniks for a stranger. Lucky stranger!

renee-zellweger.jpgNote to self: find out where Renee Zellweger shops. Hang out there. Hope to get chatting to her. Why? Well, because the last person who found herself shoe-shopping in the same store as Renee got herself a free pair of Manolos from the star, that's why. Makeup artist Wendy Faracino was admiring the Manolos in Saks when she bumped into Renee, who was doing likewise. Shortly after she returned to work, Wendy received a gift-wrapped shoe box from the store manager himself, containing the coveted Manolos - paid for by Renee. "She wanted you to have them," was the simple explanation. Aww! Isn't that a lovely story? And don't you just wish it had been you?

Posso The Spat: very bold over-the-shoe accessories, inspired by the late 1800s

possothespat.jpg

At first I thought I was completely crazy, and had somehow clicked over to the ferociously fugly Halloween accessories sure to come out soon, which always feature those super-cheap PVC over-the-shoe concoctions. But no - each of these are US$200-300 and by designers Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini. The retailer explains that these spats are "an updated version of the over-the-shoe accessory popular in the late 1800s. This spat is made of high-end Italian leather with a bendable internal wire structure." So the weird looseness, conspicious flare, odd mismatched colors and funky fits are all deliberate. At US$286 for the longest Spat, the Siren, I think I'm going to have to pass.

Evening shoes toughen up: Roberto Cavalli's gold metallic paillette embellished peep toes

roberto-cavalli-shoes.jpgNow, I've heard of armour-plated vehicles, but armour-plated shoes? I guess it would make sense (if you were particularly protective of your feet, that is) if it wasn't for the fact that they're peep toes, so your toes are still left naked and vulnerable. A flaw in Roberto Cavalli's plan! All joking aside, I think these paillette embellished shoes are really rather wonderful. Quite apart from the "armour plating", the heel is made of suede, which makes for an interesting mix of materials, and they're a real statement piece, especially when worn, as in Net-a-Porter's picture, with a simple dress. They're 550.

Davis by Ruthie Davis frame t-strap pump with narrow heels

ruthiedavistrasp.jpg

This Davis by Ruthie Davis frame t-strap pump is possibly the sexiest pair of t-strap heels I've seen in a while. The double lines across the foot at the top of the bar seem to me to be the equivalent of the 'Very Sexy' Victoria's Secret double bra straps, which always seemed cheeky and, well, 'very sexy' to me. The thin line seems quite delicate - and I'd be worried about breakage were it not for the fact that Ruthie Davis cleverly crafted that look with a single strap (a clear PVC centre connects the two black top bar lines.) Neat round toes make sure that the look isn't overdone, but 4'5'' inch towering heels promise a world of pain. US$510.

I'm not sure what makes a court shoe semi-formal, but these apparently are (there are probably some rules somewhere that I haven't been told about). They're the 'Natasha' from Schuh and are available in tan (pictured) and black for 49.99. They're snub toed with a D-ring strap on the toe and a decorative buckle on the back. Usually sale items fail to light my fire, but these ankle tie sandals from Marc Jacobs aren't half bad. Sure, they're hardly practical for this time of year, but who said you couldn't stock up for next year already (shh, you can!). Do I like these shoes? I just can't decide so let's look at the evidence. They're the 'Aude' two tone court fine suede shoes in chocolate and caramel, 119, from Hobbs. The colours are right, the material's nice and I like the little bow, but I think the heel is too low and the shoe is too long and the two looks just don't go together. Beaded wedge party shoes from Next in pretty pink

pink-next-shoes.jpgI realise it's far too early in the year to be thinking about the Christmas party season, but Next have just issued the latest edition of their Directory, which is packed full of sparkly party dresses and equally sparkly shoes. I've been fairly impressed with Next's shoe collections lately: they've gone from making rather "sensible" work wear to producing some pretty good designer-inspired numbers, and long may it continue.

These pretty wedges are a reasonably-priced 35, and will make a glamorous addition to your eveningwear wardrobe. I love the idea of wedge party shoes - if you're going to be dancing all night, they'll be a lot easier to stand up in than strappy stilettos - and I particularly love the pink version of these, with their peep toe and tiny bow.

Skechers 'Bikers Rosebud' casual shoe with sequins - is 'fashion sports' just bad advertising?

90_541_4131.jpgWhen I read the words "Fashion Sports" as a shoe category it almost provoked a horrible sneer from my face. If ever there was a section of shoes I'm destined to hate, that would be it. I loathe almost all sportswear, and I hate when shoe designers try to combine fashion with aspects of trainers. But then I remembered my gorgeous Green Flash, and realised that, well, quite a few of my shoes belong to this godforsaken 'genre'.

This pair of shoes from Skechers sums up my thoughts on the category much more succinctly, which is exactly why I think they're awful. The Bikers Rosebud shoes look like some lovechild of a disco loving trainer and some pretty salmon pink ballet pumps. And for 45, that's certainly no match made in heaven if you ask me.

Topshop's flower detail slingbacks - the acceptable side of perspex on shoes?

perspex-shoes.jpgWe've said "no" to perspex more times than Amy Winehouse has said "no" to rehab, but still it keeps on coming. Topshop have used perspex on their shoes a few times this year, but I think these pretty flower peep toes are the most acceptable ones so far - in fact I had to do a double take to find out where, exactly, the clear bit was. (It's just next to the toe, in case you're having the same problem). It still wouldn't be my first choice of footwear fabric, but I can see myself wearing these with a little black dress and not minding too much about the clear plastic next to my toes - how about you?

Five fabulous flat (or almost-flat) boots for fall

asso-bow-flat-boots.jpg High heels are all well and good (in fact, a lot of the time they're more than just good) but sometimes when that cold, winter wind is blowing and there's an icy path to negotiate as you go about your daily business, flats can be a lot more practical.

Happily, flat boots can also be pretty these days, with a lot of designs around that you'll want to wear all day, rather than take off and exchange for stilettos once you get to wherever you're going. I love the bow detailing on these black slouch boots from ASOS. It helps pretty-up what would otherwise be a standard pair of black boots, and the small heel also gives it a bit of an edge over something totally flat. Read on to see four more of our favourite flat boots for this season...

anna-sui-biker-boots.jpg

Biker boots have never really gone out of fashion completely, but this year they're going through something of a revival. As well as being hard-wearing and comfortable, they're also good for giving a bit of a rockier edge to your outfits. This pair by Anna Sui is in a lovely bronze metallic leather, which you probably won't see on too many real bikers, but which will nevertheless make a nice change from black. Again, there's a small wooden stacked heel to give you just a little bit of extra height if you need it.

steve-madden-flats.jpg

I defy you not to find a colour you like amongst the 22 different shades Steve Madden's 'Titania' flat boots are available in. The plum suede shown here is my favourite, but you'll find everything from trusty old black and grey to a really quite frightening pink and green patent. Colours aside, the shape is a classic, and will look great over leggings or skinny jeans. They're 129.95.

frye-boots.jpg

Famous for their chunk Campus boots, Frye have retained the military influence but gone for a more feminine shape with these 'Annie' mid-calf boots, which come in tan and black. As the ShopBop website points out, these will only get better with age (which is a good thing considering they're $298) so they'll be good for a few more winters yet. Again, this is a style that looks good over skinnies or leggings, but they'll also work with a casual skirt or dress.

kickers-boots.jpg

More harness detailing, this time from Kickers, which is a brand I tend to forget about. These boots are available at Next for 75, and while the slouchy shape is fairly familiar, it's the taupe colour that grabbed my attention with these. It makes an interesting alternative to black or brown, but is still fairly versatile, and will work with lots of different colours. These are also available in black, though, if you're not sure about it.

Ted Baker Swing court shoes in suede and mock croc

x_x_lz221_x_large.jpgSuede always seems to make a comeback around Autumn/Winter and this season appears to be no different. Who gives a hoot that it's the least practical shoe material for wet weather? It looks good!

These Ted Baker Swing courts are keeping it very autumnal with their dark brown suede. I'm not sure about the addition of mock crocodile skin for the ribbon detail, but then I've never been a fan of crocodile print in any form. These manage to pull it off by keeping it entirely un-garish. What do you think? Worth the 64.99 price tag from VivaLaDiva?

Office's 'Trinity' t-bar court shoes in pale green leather with a flower on the toe

green-t-bar-shoes.jpg As much as I love green in all its many shades, I can't help feeling that it's a bit late in the season for these pale green t-bars from Office, which wouldn't be pale green for very long where I live, thanks to all the rain we tend to get. That said, it's always good to plan your shoe wardrobe in advance, and if you buy these now and keep them tucked away until next spring, you'll feel almost like you've just got a free pair of shoes when you finally get to wear them. The flower detailing on the toe, is, of course, what sets these shoes apart from the multitude of other mid-heeled t-bars we've been seeing around, and it gives them a pretty, almost vintage look. If you can't wait until springtime, they're also available in tan and black, and are 55.

Is it a shoe? Is it a boot? No, it's <strike>superman</strike> Steve Madden's 'Tie'

TIE_cognac-leather_large.jpgWhat is the deal with shoes that have been turned into boots? I don't understand the idea behind taking a perfectly normal looking shoe design and transforming it into some horrific boot/shoes with built in socks shaped monstrosity. Designers, if we want covered legs while wearing courts we use this crazy invention called TIGHTS!

These Tie boots by Steve Madden have clearly annoyed me. I see no redeeming features about the pair except (perhaps) the cognac shade of brown. While these might have made a perfectly lovely pair of leather courts, or an equally acceptable pair of suede knee boots, the marriage of the two just does not work if you ask me. Hopefully this is the last we'll see of this odd notion.

The retailer explains that this accessory is called "The Spat," and is "an updated version of the over-the-shoe accessory popular in the late 1800s, this spat is made of high-end Italian leather with a bendable internal wire structure." So the weird looseness, conspicious flare, odd mismatched colors and funky fits are all deliberate. At US$286 for the longest Spat, the Siren, I think I'm going to have to pass.

Ribbons for the daytime from Miss Selfridge's tan Town Shoe

511851106_normal.jpgSometimes I can be spectacularly girly, and it's that trait that I blame for my strange adoration for ribbons. Don't get me wrong, I don't love anything just because it has a ribbon on it, but it does make me want to reach out and touch the dress/package/shoe in question.

In the case of these Town shoes from Miss Selfridge, I don't think even the ribbon is enough to make me love this pair. The colour combination is what is putting me off. The tan (or rather cream, as it appears) leather is fine, a rather vintage shade, but it's made to look putrid and almost green by the gold trim. Unfortunately this poor shade matching has ruined a perfectly good shoe for me.

'Cara' ankle strap platform heels at Oasis in rich raspberry suede

cara.bmp There's nothing quite like the buzz of seeing a gorgeous pair of shoes with a reasonable price tag that means you won't have to starve yourself/avoid paying rent for a month, and hopefully you'll get that rush of excitement too, when looking at these 'Cara' platform heels by Oasis. Also available in black, they're a lovely rich raspberry colour - although I have to admit that I'd be tempted to snip that ankle strap off immediately! They're 50 and are currently available in sizes 3-8.

Christian Dior's brown suede t-strap sandals are a little on the scary side

Dior.jpgThey say there's a first time for everything and in the case of these Christian Dior heels it's the first time I've been scared of a pair of shoes. The designer sandals, available at Bluefly for $389.99, are generally ok, but something about the scalloped grommet trim (the name alone gives me the heebie jeebies) freaks me out: they look like little eyes that follow me wherever I move.

However, another well known saying is "one man's junk is another man's treasure" and these shoes were a hit with a girl in my office, who thought they were funky and sexy! So, what'll it be: a sexy new addition to your shoe collection or a pair of heels that could frighten small children. I know where I stand, how about you?

Faith's 'Crikey' spot covered peep toe heels

crikey.bmp There's nothing like oversized spots to add a bit of fun to a pair of shoes! Faith's new 'Crikey' heels are fabulous and flirty, and are even reduced from 55 to 46.75! Available in perhaps more versatile black with white spots, you can also get hold of a pair in purple, with black spots. These are my favourites - I'm seeing them with bright thick tights (perhaps dark-ish green?) - what about you?

Patent double strap flat pumps from Topshop

42M27RBLK_normal.jpgIt seems that designers have gone straps mad this season. Maybe, just maybe, they've been heeding the Mary Jane fetishes of us Shoewawa girls. Okay, that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

Whatever the motivation I have been generally very excited by most of the Mary Jane inspired shoes popping up everywhere, but I'm still not sure about the flat versions. Take this pair from Topshop. The idea is all very nice, and they look quite pretty in the picture, but what if your feet are above average? Will they look disproportionate? Any girls in the know on this front, please share your wisdom. This shiny patent pair are available from Topshop for a very reasonable 28.

Davis by Ruthie Davis Frame T-Strap Pump

ruthiedavistrasp.JPG

This Davis by Ruthie Davis Frame T-Strap Pump possibly the sexiest pair of T-strap heels I've seen in a while. The double lines striping across the foot at the top of the bar seem to me to be the equivalent of the 'Very Sexy' Victoria's Secret double bra straps, which always seemed cheeky and, well, 'very sexy' to me. The thin line seem quite deliate to me - and I'd be worried about breakage where it not for the fact that Ruthie Davis cleverly crafted that look with a single strap (a clear PVC center connects the two black top bar lines.) Neat round toes make sure that the look isn't overdone, but 4'5'' inch towering heels promise a world of pain. US$510.

If the Shoe Fits: A shocking shoe confession

foreveramber.jpgAmber McNaught writes...

There's no easy way to say this, especially not to an audience of stylish shoe fanatics, so I'm just going to come right out with it: I bought a pair of Ugg boots.

Trust me, this surprised me just as much as it probably surprises you. And it really surprised my family, who're used to see me tripping around in heels every day, and tend to ask me if I'm feeling OK if I decide to wear a pair of flats for a change. I'm well known amongst my friends for being a high-heels girl through and through, and everyone who knows me knows that no matter what I do, I'll be doing it in the most unsuitable shoes imaginable. Until now.

So, what happened?

Well, it was a slow burn. You see, I live in Scotland. It's cold here - very, very cold. And I'm a cold-blooded person - the kind of girl who takes a cardigan with her even on the hottest of days, in case she starts to feel chilly (and normally ends up wearing it, too) and who thinks nothing of tucking a hot water bottle under her sweater during the coldest winter days. For me, winter is one long struggle to stay warm, and so it was that, at around about this time last year, I suddenly found myself thinking that a pair of furry boots sounded like a pretty good idea.

I tried my best to resist. In order to try and satisfy the sudden Ugg-cravings that had risen up inside me, I bought a pair of Ugg-style slippers to wear around the house. They kept the cravings at bay for a little while, but pretty soon a problem arose: I couldn't wear them outside.

That I even wanted to wear my furry slippers in public was a big shock to me at first. You see, when Uggs first started to become popular, years ago, I had been one of their their fiercest critics. "Ugg for ugly" I thought, smugly assuring myself that I would never, ever put such things on my feet. But time passed, and repeated exposure to the Ugg beast started to make them look "normal" - acceptable, even. I know, I know...

This year I didn't even try to resist. As soon as the leaves started to fall, I went out and bought myself a pair of the offending footwear. And I love them. I'm not going to claim that they're the most attractive boots out there, (they're for walking the dog, running to the corner shop and slobbing out in around the house) but they're comfortable and warm, and, unlike my shoe-nemesis, Crocs, I feel that, in this case, the comfort and cosiness of the boots outweighs the less-than-elegant appearance.

Don't get me wrong: I won't be wearing them as a fashion accessory, and I definitely won't be wearing them with a denim skirt (or any kind of skirt, come to think of it) but on those early-morning walks with the dog, when stilettos just don't cut it and my feet threaten to go numb with the cold, they're going to be a Godsend. I may even buy another pair when they wear out...

Amber McNaught is the editor of Shoewawa, but she fully expects there to be calls for her resignation now that her guilty secret is out...

Yay or Nay Wednesday

yaynay96.jpgIf last week's Yay or Nay offering has anything to say about it, it appears that shoes and dirty clothing (or rather, just-washed clothing) really shouldn't mix! Camper's washing-line design 'Twins', in their square-toed flat style, were voted wishy-washy by a landslide. Still, if you're not swayed by the vote, you can pick them up from La Redoute.

Wedges are generally acknowledged as the perfect style to add height without putting too much strain on your feet; but what of this week's offering? Certainly taking the style to new heights, with their silver-tinged heel: are they footloose and fancy free or nose-bleed nauseating? Yay or Nay and why?

[Don't forget to vote at Trashionista, Bridalwave, Hippy Shopper, Corrie Blog, Catwalk Queen, Kiss and Makeup, Shoewawa and Shiny Shiny too!]

Ugly Shoe Wars - dkode's 'Isabella' boots or Donald J Pliner's 'Juno' mules: which would you choose if you had to pick one?

dkode%20isabella.jpg Donald%20J%20Pliner.jpg
Well, last week's choice between ugly shoes was a turn-up for the books. For what was probably the only time in its life, Irregular Choice trumped a pair of Louboutins seven votes to four (though in the Louboutins defence they did look like fish!). This week is the turn of the sale shoe. As if life isn't hard enough for a pair of fugly shoes they're then humiliatingly marked down, depressed with the knowledge that despite being under a tenner, they'll still stay on the shelf.

Admittedly, with today's offerings, the sale price is hardly a bargain: the dkode 'Isabella' boots are in the sale for $200 and the Donald J Pliner 'Juno' mules are down to $221.50. But look at them! Would you wear them even if they were going free? Unfortunately in this scenario you have to pretend to so which will it be? Oh, just to make it that little bit harder, imagine there are no long trousers to wear with these babies.

Clarks make dreams come true with 'Apple Snow' T-bar heels

applesnowclarks.jpegGiven that they're best known for their practical but ugly offerings here at Shoewawa, it was with great surprise that I discovered these red leather lovelies were from Clarks! Weird and wonderful? Faith's unusual Cremview T-bars

881076.jpgMy adoration for T-bars is well known by many. You're probably getting tired of reading me saying that if you're a regular Shoewawa junkie, but it remains true. I'm going to ask you girls, though, what do you think when designers try to inject a twist into a design classic?

While subtle embellishments usually make me smile, this is one I can't quite get my head around, and as such I've no idea whether I love or hate this shoe. The colour is near perfection, the heel is lovely and the button detail is effortlessly cute. But what is going on with that off centre t-bar? Is the Cremview fabulous or awful? I have no idea anymore. What I do know is that they're 51 from Faith.

Samantha Pleet Spring/Summer 2008, With Video

Updated 9/23: updated video with final cut

Brooklyn's own Samantha Pleet recently presented her Spring/Summer 2008 collection, this time with the help of a short film featuring her clothing. While 2007's Spring collection was steeped in stories of pirates and vagabonds, for 2008 Pleet's historical references, showing up in the form of collar and button details, are now mixed with elements of a style we like to call Brooklyn casual (just ride the L Train on any sunny Summer day and you'll see what we mean).

Harlot's red suede 'Toggle' wedges from ASOS are quirky but wearable

Harriot-Toggle.jpgI've never bought a pair of shoes so distinct (read: odd) looking as this pair of Harlot wooden heel wedges from ASOS, but I never fail to be intrigued.

Unlike many quirky shoes, these still manage to look entirely wearable. Despite being unarguably eye catching in red suede, they'd be an easy pair to team with many outfits. I can see them with a little black dress looking fabulous. My only gripe is the tiny peep toe, which is barely visable in the photo. Still, if you are entranced you can grab some from ASOS for 90.

I wish we had a feature called ridiculous shoe of the week because this would be my nomination - Stuart Weitzman's gold leather elasticised 'Gladiator' sandals, US$153. Please excuse me while I stop laughing. Who on earth is going to wear these? Monsoon's 'Henry' T-bar shoes in snakeskin effect fabric

henry.bmp It's a rare occasion that I'm not a fan of Monsoon's shoe and boot offerings, but these 'Henry' t-bars really are throwing me for a loop. They have an attractive t-bar design but I really am not keen on the snakeskin effect style and think they might work better with a taller heel. Anntian

Imagine a fashion collection inspired by molecular gastronomy and we're betting you don't come up with something like Anntian's Fall/Winter '08 collection. The German fashion line looks to the scientific and the geometric for its inspiration and comes up with a minimalist treatment combining high-quality fabrics, wearable fits and abstract prints. Last summer it was all about stripes, the previous winter was a celebration of the square and this winter we have subtle gradients and not so subtle multi-dot patterns, meant to represent the aesthetics of molecular cuisine.

Shoe-centric world: Do celebrity shoe choices affect yours?

640719172_l.jpg Orla Doherty writes...

I'll have to admit, I have a strange addiction to celebrity tittle tattle, and I could probably keep you up to date with the comings an goings of even the most insignificant and worthless of showbiz types. While I enjoy passing unfounded judgement on the clothes of said celebrities, I'm always at odds as to whether I should buy into anyone else's style.

These famous girls are lucky enough to have smart people behind the scenes picking out fantastic clothes, and, of course, shoes, for them to strut down the red carpet in, and they have the added luxury of the bank balance to splurge. Almost every red carpet in LA will have one pair of Louboutin heels grace its pile throughout an evening. But does that encourage your coveting, or dispel it?

I'm going to stoop to naming names, ladies. Victoria Beckham is a girl whose personal taste often offends my eyes, she wears some ensembles I'd run from if I saw them on a shop rail. So, when she wears a gorgeous pair of shoes it leaves me reluctant to admit their beauty. If I were lucky enough to have the money (or the ability to save) for the pair I'd be put right off by the notion of some other fashion savvy girl saying "Those are Posh Spice's shoes, aren't they?" It's enough to make me recoil in horror.

Am I alone in this? Perhaps it is my general contempt for the current breed of celebrities. Or perhaps I'm just being a snob. After all, if it were someone with style I'd probably be somewhat encouraged.

What do think? Do you have a shoe style icon, or are celebrities ruining all the fun for us humble shoe lovers?

My Favourite Shoes: Daphne's Hale Bob glitter pumps

Imagen008-1.jpg"Wow," is about the only word I can come up with to describe these glittery Hale Bob pumps, sent in by Shoewawa reader, Daphne. It's not hard to see why they're her favourites. Over to Daphne, who says, "I know they're attention grabbers so I'll keep them for a special occasion, I love to just look at them in admiration. The glitter is beautiful and the buckle with the red details makes them look kinda vintage I think - or at least they tried to make them look that way."

The shoes were an eBay bargain, picked up for just $27, which just goes to show, it's always worth keeping an eye on eBay's shoe section...

Topshop's take on Iki Mezura's swiss cheese bow-detailed flats?

topshopstuddedbowpump.jpgWhen I first saw these flats on Topshop's website, I must admit I did a bit of a double-take: surely these are inspired by Iki Mezura's heavily cheese-inspired, bow-detailed design from last year! While the lovely cornflower blue of Mezura's flats was their saving grace, Topshop's pumps seem to have little to redeem them. Dune's green bow ankle boots make a nice change from the usual winter colours

dune-ankle-boots.jpgMost footwear manufacturers tend to stick to classic black or shades of brown when it comes to boots - probably because those are the most versatile colours, and if you're spending a lot of money on boots, you want them to work with everything. Sometimes, though, you may find yourself craving something just a little bit different, and when those times come, look no further than Dune, who've made these pretty bow ankle boots in a lovely shade of dark green. The muted colour means that these aren't exactly "in your face", but they still make a refreshing change from all the blacks, browns and tans. The style is simple but chic, with the high heel and bow giving these a very ladylike appearance. They're 65.

Black and gold contrast peep toe wedge shoes from ASOS

asos-kate-wedges.jpgAccording to ASOS, these gold and black wedges are "in the style of Kate Moss". This claim has confused me a little because, in the accompanying picture, the shoes Kate's wearing look nothing like these, aside from the colour scheme. Never mind, though: whether Kate Moss would wear them or not, I know I'd wear them, and that's good enough for me. These are the kind of wedge heels that will look great in winter with a pair of opaque tights, although they'd look just as good with bare legs and a party dress. The shaped heel stops them looking too clumsy, and while the velcro strap across the front sounds like it should belong on a child's shoe, the contrast between it and the gold heel makes it work. These are a bargainous 30 from ASOS.

Diesel's 'Helenae' cream ankle boot in rose embossed leather

photolarge445345345881.jpgThe dipping cut along the tops of booties is just everywhere now. Diesel's take, on these embossed-rose-western-look line, is rather striking. The rose-embossing works better on this soft cream-colored ankle bootie than on the dramatic 'Purpurea' knee-high black boot featured today, no? The cut is delicately outlined by a strip of silver-studded leather, and the upturned toe and pronounced heel somehow seem proportionate here, and appropriate. US$225, down from US$364 for this 'Helenae' ankle boot, in cream.

TARYN by Taryn Rose patent glitter pumps - comfortable shoes with an injection of glamour

Taryn.jpgHeels that are stylish and super comfortable. Not a group of words that tend to be put together, but orthopaedic surgeon Taryn Rose began her footwear line with exactly that in mind. I'm eager to get my feet into a pair of these patent glitter pumps, which are part of the TARYN by Taryn Rose collection, to test the theory in person. I'm a sucker for a round toe and a chunky heel and these stacked ones covered in silver glitter are enough to catch my attention. All I need to know is that I can walk in them for more than 15 minutes (10 minutes longer then I usually can) and they're as good as sold. Pick up your own pair at Neiman Marcus for $225.

A list of things I like about Scorah Pattullo's red 'Hannah' slingback shoes

p31_x_se089_x_large.jpg
Things I like about this shoe: 1) the lethal looking heel 2) the deep red colour 3) the luxuriousness of the leather 4) the fact that there isn't really much shoe there at all 5) That it's named 'Hannah' after the designer's daughter 6) That it's in the sale for 69, down from 230.

If those six reasons are enough for you then you can pick this Scorah Pattullo 'Hannah' slingback sandal up from Viva La Diva.

More calf-width boots! Duo's latest collection includes pink suede knee boots, classic black heels, green platforms and more

duo-boots-new-season.jpg

When we wrote about Women Within's plus-sized calf boots last week, quite a few of you commented to say, "Cool - but what about the women who have no calves to speak of?" Well, given that I'm one of those women myself (I have the calves of a little boy, meaning that almost all boots look like wellies on me), I'm well aware of how hard it can be to find boots that don't drown you. The good news is that lots of shoe-makers are starting to cotton onto the idea that there's no such thing as an "average" sized calf, and are making boots to fit everyone. Whew!

Leading the field are Duo Boots, who are specialists in calf-width boots. Every style they make is available in a choice of 21 different calf sizes, making it all but impossible not to find a perfect fit. Rather than sticking to the more "sensible" end of the market, Duo also make a range of styles: you'll find pink and green suede, platform soles and patent leather tucked in amongst the more classic styles they have on offer. Duo have stores in the UK and Amsterdam, but you can also order from their website, with shipping available to anywhere in the world.

Valentino's python sweetheart pumps are to die for

XCS789BPITNO_100.jpg
You might not believe this, but writing for Shoewawa is painful work. I'm constantly falling in love with shoes that I just can't afford and it breaks my heart nearly every day. My latest lust objects are these Valentino python sweetheart pumps, US$695 from Intermix, made of python skin with killer heels and a beautiful V front. Aren't they to die for? I especially love the raised back as it makes the shoes extra curvy and sculpted.

Aruna Seth - new luxury designer shoes!

ARUNA-SETH-SS08-041-1.jpg

There's nothing like a new range of designer shoes to get the heart of a shoe-lover fluttering, and when the shoes in question are as gorgeous as these ones, well, you've even more reason to get excited. These are from the Spring/Summer 08 collection from the designer, and are the first collection from the label. The shoes are all handcrafted in Italy, and the soft leathers, soft leathers, Swarovski crystal detailing and gold trim makes them some of the most luxurious pieces of footwear we've seen in a while. A few of the pieces are pictured above - check out the Aruna Seth website for more.

Hollywould's round-toe 'Frances' pumps in shimmering purple and fuchsia satin

hollywould-frances.jpgHollywould's shoes are never less than dramatic, but I think they've excelled themselves with these satin 'Frances' pumps. The curved heel and satin bow would be eye-catching enough, but that bright purple colour with the fuchsia trim means that you couldn't fail to get noticed in these. If the bright colours are too much for you, 'Frances' is also available in black and brown, and is $395. I'm not sure how practical those satin-covered heels will be (I'd definitely not want to wear them in the rain, put it that way) but then, shoes like these aren't really really meant to be practical, are they?

'Purpurea' knee-high boots by Diesel featuring embossed leather and gold studs

diesle-boots.jpgNow this is a dramatic boot! This 'Purpurea' knee-high boot by Diesel features not only embossed rose detailing on jet black leather, but also a row of gold tone studs along the curvacious topline and a carrying bag. Darn straight - this pair of boots better come with bonuses, since it costs a freakin' chockful - US$401 (and thats the sale price, down from US$573!)

The one thing I don't like about this pair of boots is the slightly upturned toe, and the extremely pronounced heel. Looks a bit witchy to me. Hopefully the knee-high length and elaborately ornate leather will keep attention off that, though, right?

Tips on how to wear in shoes - as suggested by the Shoewawa readers!

76651952.jpgLucy Hulme writes...

A few months ago, I told you about Victoria Beckham's advice to all high heel fans out there, whereby wearing a new pair of heels around the housew ith a pair of thick socks should loosen them up to fit your foot better. Many of you agreed, and lots of you came up with loads of other fabulous ideas as well. Carry on reading to see what they were!

1. Take some newspaper sheets and shape them inside the shoe so they're tight. Then pour alcohol (from a chemist) around the paper until it's wet outside, and put it in the shoe again. Apparently this is fabulous for making leather stretch if you have a pair of leather shoes which are pinching, but it takes around three days to work. Alternatively, as Arelya suggested, pouring the alcohol in and then wearing thick socks works even more quickly.

2. You could try putting leather shoes in the microwave inside a plastic bag (just for a few seconds) - but as Jimena, who made the suggestion, pointed out, there could be nails that aren't visible so it's a risky one!

3. Use a nail-file in the shoe where it rubs until soft.

4. If the leather is very tough, stuff the shoe tightly with newspaper or socks then cover the shoe with fabric and hammer it, softening the leather. Arelya recommends this if your shoes are too tough to wear in even with socks.

Do you have anyone fabulous tips to share with the rest of our Shoewawa readers? Post a comment and I'll update the post! Happy heel wearing...!

Bargain buy Spectator platform shoes from Forever 21

42313300-01.jpg I'm going to call upon our US readers for help, are Forever 21 shoes wearable? I couldn't believe the price of this pair of platforms and, being a UK dweller, I have no idea of their quality.

The shoes undeniably look good, although the top view looks a little shoddy craft-wise. The broguing detail is something I have a real fondness for, and the platform and heel are as sexy as ever. They're available from Forever 21 for just $19.80. So help me girls, are these the sort of shoes that are wearable, or are they bargain bin fodder for a reason?

Top Ten Boots for Autumn - knee-highs, ankle boots and flat boots for Fall!

32C03RPLE_normal.jpgDid you know that tomorrow is officially the first day of Autumn? It is, you know, and while it's always sad to see the end of summer, there is one small consolation - you get to buy new boots! This season looks like being a particularly good one for boots lovers, with something to suit just about everyone, from booties to knee-highs and from flats to heels. Here's our roundup of some of the different styles available right now, kicking off with these gorgeous calf-length buckle boots from Topshop.

This is a really versatile style (although perhaps more so in brown than in the purple shade shown here): the cowboy-like detailing at the top will make it work really well with jeans, but it's also smart enough to be worn with a skirt or dress. The mid-height heel, meanwhile, means you'll be able to walk in it - always a good idea during the slippiest months of the year!

jimmy-choo-boots.jpg

If walking isn't something you're going to be doing a whole lot of (well, you wouldn't want to get mud on that patent leather now, would you?) Jimmy Choo's 'Chile' knee high boots are worth saving up 720 for. Jimmy Choo has a well-deserved reputation for making some of the most elegant boots around: not for him the slouchy, comfy, lived-in look: instead, these almond-toed stilettos will add a touch of glamour to any outfit with their on-trend patent leather and and gold trim heel.

800800.jpg

At the other end of the scale, Faith's 'Molly' is strictly casual. These are the kind of boots that look like they'll only get better with age: they have a little bit of pirate-style appeal and will look great over skinny jeans, for a slightly edgy, rock-chic look. They're 80.75 and also available in Brown.

wedge-boots.jpg

Although many people associate wedge heels with summer shoes, they can work on boots, too, if done right. These 'calf-length Cutie' boots by N.Y.L.A manage to avoid looking too chunky by using a seriously curvy heel, which will be easier to walk on than stilettos, but will still give you some height. The buttons are just for show, but add some interest to the boot, as does the scalloped edging. They're $121.46.

asos-shoe-boots.jpg

Ah, the shoe-boot, or "schbootie" - the perfect halfway house for those who need some winter boots but would prefer it if they looked a bit like shoes, thanks very much. If you've ever fancied trying out the shoe-boot, now's a good time to do it because they're everywhere this winter. It's a style that looks great with jeans or trousers, but can look equally good with a skirt-dress and thick tights, so at least you know you'll get a lot of wear out of them. This pair is 30 from ASOS, and comes in blue or oxblood patent leather.

guesstretch.jpg

For those of us with "non-standard" calves (that'll be most of us, then), a stretch boot is a good choice, and can sometimes be your best chance to wear knee-highs. These stretch boots by Guess will hug your legs, creating a rather sexy look. The over-sized buckle at the ankle, meanwhile, breaks up all that black and helps make your ankle look slimmer. They're $153.95.

barats-star-boots.jpg

I'd argue that a pair of flat, black boots are a winter essential - especially if you're planning on doing any walking during the chilliest months. They go with everything, are comfortable and easy to walk in, and if you choose a relatively plain style, they should last you through a couple of seasons at least. Barratts 'Star' boots are simple but stylish and the wide top will let you tuck in your jeans and stop the hems getting soaked. At 40, they're pretty good value for real leather tall boots, too.

kors-ankle.jpg

With most people sticking to brown and black when it comes to choosing winter boots, it makes a nice change to see a pair of boots in another colour. Metallics have been in fashion for a while now, and Michael Kors uses them to great effect in this 'Studio' ankle boot which comes in the soft gold bronze shown and an embossed pewter, as well as in standard black. Price is from $188.95.

riboots.jpg

River Island have a great selection of boots this season, with all of the styles we've mentioned above, plus some others that we haven't. If you read Shoewawa regularly, you'll already know that ankle boots are going to be popular again this winter, and this pair, with their fold-over top, small platform and high heel are a nice example of the trend. They're 74.99 and also available in black. That fold-over top is designed to be seen, so don't be afraid to try them with skirts rather than hiding them away under trousers!

NMX04KM_mn.jpg

Well, if you're going to wear booties, you may as well buy them from the best! These bow ankle booties by Christian Louboutin don't just have a red sole - they're red all over, meaning that they'll truly stand out amongst all those dark shades of winter. A classic shape is prettied-up with a cute bow at the heel, and while the $1,040 price tag means you'll probably be afraid to wear them in bad weather, you'll at least enjoy admiring them!

Matchmaker, matchmaker make me a patch...work shoe!

patchworkbologna.JPGI find these shoes by Mario Bologna strangely intriguing. They're certainly not pretty, and perhaps not even attractive, but there's something there that calls to my shoe-loving soul! The patchwork combination of crocodile, jacquard and tartan - topped off with a floral and diamante embellishment - really shouldn't work; but I can't help but feel that it does! What you'd wear them with, I have no idea; but they're probably only suited to the adventurous among us! If you're keen to make a match they're $174EU from Yoox.

Enzo Angiolini 'Prize' booties with pewter outline and 'diamond quilted' centre

_5496256.jpgI wasn't quite sure what I was looking at, when I first looked at this shoe. I thought - whoa, when did Nordstrom start using manequins for shoe photos? (Yes, I can recognize manequins from product photos and likely identify which retailers own them... case in point: Anthropologie vs. Bluefly. You know you can, too!) But that isn't the case with this shoe. It only loooks like its a silver pump with a very high back and a cutout showing the fishet stockings underneath. In reality, it's a bootie by Enzo Angiolini called the 'Prize' which features a pewter outline and 'diamond quilted' centre, and costs US$148.95. How the heck do you wear it? I'm repulsed yet intrigued.

It's not often you come across a pair of Irregular Choice shoes that aren't, well, irregular, but I think I've found some with these mint green suede heels, 47. The material's normal (if mint suede is your thing), the shape isn't crazy and there are no pictures of cute but scary dolls. Bertie's Gyoza flats leave me confused!

Gyoza.jpgNow, I see where Bertie were going here. The raised wooden sole is typical of the style of shoes worn in Japan, and Bertie clearly thought they would add that design element to a pair of pumps, thus giving a pair of ballet pumps, like the Gyoza, some eastern charm. Unfortunately what looked great in their head hasn't exactly worked out in the final production in my opinion. Sure the colour is lush, the ankle tie cute and the diamante topped bow in the front is a pretty addition, but all of that would have been fine without the added wooden block, which looks odd up against it all and creates a heavy looking shoe. Available at The Shoe Studio for 70, what do you think?

Tory Burch's Winnie wellies keep out the rain with a hint of style

toryb2000812867_prod_medium.jpgI'd love for wellingtons to be only necessary in festival season, but I've just looked outside my window and it is quite frankly bordering on torrential out there. While the lumpen garden green welly isn't exactly what you want to be seen in on the high street, there are alternatives.

I never thought I'd see a designer 'rain boot' in my life, but these Tory Burch Winnie boots have proven me wrong on that. The patent banding and logo give these a little edge of style to say "I have to keep the rain out, but I don't have to look like a garden gnome". They're available from Shopbop for $295. Perhaps a little bit too much to splash out (sorry) on rain wear for some, but then I do live in Manchester...

Ugly Shoe of the Week: "Why, God, Why?????" Edition

uglymarcboots.jpg
Ok. I get it. Ruffles are in. But Marc? Mr Jacobs? Are you listening? This time you've gone too far.

Now, I'm all for high fashion footwear, but this is ridiculous. I'm begging you, Marc, stop producing such ugly boots! I thought you'd take heed after our last few chats, but it seems that tact is no longer in play here, and now it's time for some tough love. To be blunt: your 'suede ruffle boots' make even a "size zero" mannequin look disproportionately chunky and disfigured. Surely you realise that any sensible woman wouldn't embellish a basic (but fabulous) pair of platform heels with... a... well... suede attachment thingamajig?!? See what you've done? I'm so appalled, I can barely speak!

sloucbananaboot.jpgSo Shoewawa's Orla isn't a big fan of slouchy boots or heeled boots... but I am! (Sorry, darling, I love the knee high flats you posted still!)

I daresay I own a pair of boots almost exactly like these - with the western cut upper, slouched middle, pull-on fit, stacked three inch heel... in a yummy shade of dark brown. Sometimes they're quite a pain to pull on, but once I'm putting together my outfit (yes, I dress from shoes up too, girls!) I think the versatility that these boots offer makes the initial hurdle absolutely worthwhile. Jeans, tee, cute bomber jacket...done! Out the door. US$138 (down from US$198) for this 'Bianca' boot by Banana Republic.

Get your message across with Shoe Missy's new stacked platforms

marzipan.jpgI love original shoes, and when I spy one of my girly mates wearing a pair I've never seen before it generally produces a lot of "ooh"ing from me. Shoemissy, queens of bespoke and quirky shoes, have come up with a rather clever idea that can ensure you get the one offs you've been searching for.

The stacked sparkly platforms are emblazoned with your personal name/message/quip in satin, ensuring that it's there for good. I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough for these statement shoes, but they are very cool. Hands up who's getting a 'Shoewawa' pair? Get yours for 50.

Stella McCartney floral print wedges on sale

stella%20sale.jpgEnd of season clearance usually spells horror for me. I used to be a total sale junkie, but now I find no inspiration from the dregs of past season. Call me a snob, but it's often a futile endeavour. My saving grace while trawling the Net-a-Porter clearance stock, however, came in the form of these pretty wedges from Stella McCartney.

These are very gorgeous, a perfect pair of wedges. They won't suffer too much from season crossover either thanks to the monochrome colours. Designer shoes always come at a price, and the sale doesn't make too sizeable a dent unfortunately. This pair can be yours for 220.50.

Woman Within's plus-size calf boots - no more sore legs!

woman-within.jpg Knee-high boots are the bane of many a woman's life, because as if it wasn't hard enough to find styles to fit your feet, you suddenly have to find yourself some boots that fit your legs, too - and that can be easier said than done. For anyone who's ever turned blue in the face from the effort of pulling up a zip that just. won't. fit, Woman Within's range of plus-size calf boots could be manna from heaven. There are a few different styles to choose from, (the ones shown are from the Via Accent range, where prices are from $49.99 - $64.99) all with calves which either stretch to fit or come in different widths to suit different leg shapes. Check out the website at WomanWithin.com.

Hands up if you're still wearing cowboy boots

10380070_z1.jpgCowboy boots were absolutely massive a couple of years ago, and while they're still on the shelves of many a popular shoe shop I've not seen them on a foot in quite some time.

So, are you still an avid fan? I'm certain there are people out there who wore them before the fashion surge and still continue to do so. Where are you? This is your chance to defend the humble cowboy boot. While my dislike of boots is now common knowledge, these are a design I'm willing to let live. I never owned them when they were 'high fashion', but that doesn't make them any less of a design classic. If you're still sporting them you can update your wardrobe with this pair from Office for 85.

Luxurious velveteen Mary Janes from Dolce & Gabbana

d%26gvelvettenmjs.ms.jpg
To add a little bit of luxury to any outfit just pop on a pair of these brown velveteen Mary Jane peep toe pumps from Dolce & Gabbana, US$476 at Bluefly. There is a pretty rounded peep toe (quickly becoming an essential detail for me) and the heel is super slim and curvy and will make any pair of legs look fantastic. I adore the leather strap and decorative buckle and would love to get my hands (or should that be feet?) on a pair of these.

Keep it 'Fayre' with these red patent Fly London wedge shoes fit for a comicbook babe

14313_250_x_333.jpg
These wedges from Fly London are absolutely delicious - they look like they belong on a cartoon babe. They are the 'Fayre' red shoe, 79, (also available in the strangely named 'sludge') the distressed patent red leather is deep and glossy and the black trim really sets off the colour. The bow is black leather and the wedge has a fantastic curve. This is a pair of shoes to wear when you really want to stand out from the crowd.

How much care do you take of your feet?

bad-feet.jpg

While browsing through the photos of shoes at London Fashion Week I couldn't help but notice the truly awful state of some of the models' feet. Callouses, broken toenails, chipped nail polish - and that was just one model!

Of course, catwalk models have a harder time than most (no, really) when it comes to shoes, because they don't always have the luxury of a perfect fit, and sometimes have to force their poor feet into whatever size is available. The rest of us, though, have no such excuse, and so I'm wondering: how much care do you take of your feet?

Personally, I'm a big fan of the pedicure, even if it's just a DIY one at home. I don't think there's a whole lot of point in buying pretty shoes if you're going to stick ugly feet in them, and so a good foot care routine is absolutely essential for any die-hard shoe fan.

I like to wear a lot of peep toes, but even in the winter, when my feet aren't often on show, I try to take care of my tootsies. I've invested in a Microplane Foot File, try to use foot cream when I remember (not so good at that one) and feel naked without a slick of bright red toenail polish. It can be a bit of a high-maintenance drag, but at least my feet are always ready to slip into a pair of fabulous strappy sandals!

What about you? Do you have a foot care regime you follow religiously, and if so, what is it?

Purple patent heels by Celine at Zappos

purple-shoes.jpgSomething about these patent purple offerings by Celine make me think of a wrapped Christmas present, all glossy and shiny and finished off with a bow. $589.86 (why not just $589?) may seem like a lot of money to part with for a pair of shoes...in fact, who am I kidding - it is! But who wants to be practical about things when you've got thousands of gorgeous shoes (and a few ugly ones chucked in for good measure) to gawp at? Nope, in the land of beautiful footwear, close to $600 dollars seems more than reasonable to spend on these beauties. Right, who's up for lending me $579.86?

'Sleek' and sexy tweed calf hair pumps from Charles David

pl539298-00qlv01.jpg
Coming under the "what to wear to work" section on Piper Lime are these pretty little tweed hair calf pumps from Charles David. The 'Sleek', US$265, is actually pretty sleek and streamlined and would look great with a plain black suit. It would jazz it up without being too over the top (and you'll actually be able to walk in them). A pair to wear in the boardroom or after work in the bar.

Shellys appear to have taken inspiration from Chloe with these 'Wonder' flats

wonder.bmp The designers at Shellys certainly seem to have been inspired by designer fashion with these 'Wonder' strappy flats, because they seem remarkably similar to the triple strap flats worn by Kate Bosworth a few months ago, which were by Chloe. The similarities? Round toe, three straps (one an ankle strap), available in tan and involving gold buckle detail. The differences? Well you can also buy the high street version in black and, erm, blue snake, and they'll cost you just 30. When we featured Kate's pair back in June, many of you weren't convinced. Do you think they're wonderful, or do you wonder why anyone would ever wear them?

Miss Selfridge's bright yellow ballet pumps - just 5!

yellow.bmp If you're a big fan of bargain hunting, or are just planning on going as the sun at your next fancy dress party, Miss Selfridge may have the answer to your prayers. These yellow flats are made from polyurethane and are as simple as footwear comes, but I still found the price tag of just 5 surprising. Turn your shoe heap into shoe heaven with Cath Kidston's shoe tidy!

shoetidykidston.jpgDespite having the best intentions, when it comes to the well-being of my vast shoe collection, I tend to find that my everyday shoes often end up (gulp!) kicked into corners and piled on the bottom of shelves, instead of tucked away nicely in shoe storage boxes. I suspect, however, that this problem could be solved with a fabulous shoe tidy like this! Not a new invention, certainly; but you have to admit that Cath Kidston's beautiful 'washed roses' print is a far cry from the horrible plastic synthetics that shoe tidies usually turn up in. Designed to hook over the back of your door, it's the perfect mix of utility and pretty! If you'd like to transform your room into shoe heaven (or you'd just like to remove that pile of shoes you're always tripping over), it's a fabulous 25 from Cath Kidston.

If the Shoe Fits: Visiting the Crocs capital of the world

if%20the%20shoe%20fits.jpg Amber McNaught writes...

As I mentioned in my last column for Shoewawa, I spent a couple of weeks in Florida earlier this month (new shoe count: 6 pairs). While there are some great shoe bargains to be had in the sunshine state (just ask my long suffering husband - and my credit card company), it quickly became clear to me that I was visiting what has to be the Crocs capital of the world.

Yes, there are Crocs everywhere in the state of Florida. We travelled from Orlando down to Key West, and from Key West to Miami, and no matter where we went we saw the same thing: Crocs. Either there was some kind of crazy Crocs convention going on at the time or the unimaginable has happened: Crocs have become one of the world's favourite types of footwear.

To be fair to Florida, it's not just its own residents that have had a taste bypass. A huge number of the people we noticed wearing plastic gardening shoes were clearly tourists, which just means that the Croc invasion is a worldwide one. At one point, standing in line for a ride at Epcot, I decided to play a little game with myself to pass the time. "I bet if I turn around now, I'll be able to spot at least one pair of Crocs before I count to ten," I told myself. As it turned out, I only had to count to one - the family standing directly behind me were all wearing Crocs. Every one of them. Which brings me to some Croc-based crimes I noticed:

1. The Family Crocs

Time and time again we would see them: mum, dad and the kids, all wearing matching plastic shoes. Why?! Bad enough that you would wear Crocs yourself, but matching ones? For the whole family? I actually can't imagine a single scenario in which I'd happily wear exactly the same shoes as everyone else in my family. No matter what the shoe was (I don't think my dad would wear Louboutins, so I guess I'm safe with this statement), I suspect it would still look pretty naff, no? And when the shoe in question is a Croc? Twice as naff.

2. The Crocs that match your suitcase

At the airport on the way out I saw my first Croc Crime: a woman with a bright pink suitcase, worn with matching bright pink Crocs. I'm on the fence about the matching-your-handbag-to-you-shoes question, but again, when the shoes are Crocs, the matchy-matchy look is a big no.

fake-crocs-2.jpg3. The Fake Crocs (pictured)

Such is the popularity of Crocs that fakes have started to make their way onto the market. I took this picture in a gift shop near Disney - note the attractive multicoloured appearance!

Finally, in St Augustine, I decided I had to find out what this Crocs madness is all about. Spotting a rack of the offending footwear outside a shop, I looked around to make sure no one was watching, then slipped a pair on. I waited to be blown away by the comfort of the things, because every time I hear people defend their decision to wear Crocs, they seem to mention how very comfortable they are. It didn't happen. Sure, the Crocs were comfortable (I took a quick walk around the store to make sure), but no more comfortable than many other shoes I've worn, and the bright colour and comic shape of them made me feel like I was in fancy dress as one of Snow White's gnomes.

Needless to say, I won't be buying Crocs anytime soon. And if anyone ever says they saw me try them on, I will deny it!

Amber McNaught is the editor of Shoewawa. She doesn't care how comfortable Crocs are, she still thinks they're ugly.

'York cuff ankle bootie' by Dolce Vita

dolce2003812678_prod_medium.jpgI have this little love affair with the notion of shbooties/Peter Pan boots/booties/whatever you'd like to call them. But as with all great love affairs, there is passion, there is desire...but there isn't much room for practicality. A forbidden love, you might say. I can't figure out what in my wardrobe I might reasonably wear with Peter Pan style shoes like this, or how I'll manage to convince my workplace that these are appropriate, but I can't help lusting over them online every time I come across a particularly well shaped bootie with that turned over flap and naughty slit down the center. The 'York Cuff Ankle Bootie' by Dolce Vita is US$115.

Liam Sullivan's YouTube hit: Kelly and her 'Shoes'

Tracy Tjoeng writes...

Caution: the YouTube link contains strong language. NSFW.

For those of y'all who haven't seen this - I can't resist, I must share it with you, my fellow shoe addicts. Theres no denying that YouTube is one of the biggest things of 2006-07 and the same applies to the YouTubers who're thriving in that new medium. Love it or hate it, oddball performances are some of the biggest draws, so... Without further ado, I give you the early 2007 YouTube hit, Shoes, by Kelly (aka Liam Sullivan, a YouTube comedian.) The skit/song is unfuriatingly catchy ("These shoes are three hundred dollars!! Lets get 'em!") and watching it is somewhat akin to staring at a train wreck in slow motion.

There's been a recent revival of interest in Kelly and her shoes (Liam has released a new video, called 'Let Me Borrow That Top'), but the first hit is always the best!

Stella McCartney's unusual green marbled effect leatherette T-bar platform shoes

stella%20m.bmp If you like your shoes with a designer twist and an animal friendly edge, Stella McCartney is generally the lady to see! These unusual leatherette t-bar platforms from Net a Porter are an unusual green marbled colour and have a huge 12 cm heel with a 3 cm platform. They also feature an ankle strap, gold trip around the base of the heel and tassel detail. For me, I think they're a little too on-trend (i.e. I'm not sure that I could pull them off) but with a price tag of 385 I don't really need to worry about that! What do you think of McCartney's attempts?

Tagbo's 'Chocolate Chic' peep toe shoe is right for ladies

ladies_sandals_dolce_ch_m.jpg
Here's a reason to rejoice - Tagbo have got their new season's stock in - hurrah! I'm particularly taken with this Chocolate Chic peep toe, 65. The brown leather shoe is complemented by the cream trim and the heel is just the right height: I believe I can see a little bit of slingback action going on there, too. All in all it's a very cute rounded looking shoe that is more lady than vamp.
